The NextGen Association, in collaboration with postdoc associations from Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard School of Public Health, Tufts University, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, is pleased to announce the 2015 MassBioSciences Career Development Workshop, April 28-29, at the Broad Institute.
Our workshop is being organized to bring area scientists together for a two-day training event where they will learn about alternative career paths, transferable skills, leadership and management styles, and networking techniques.
In the world of today’s research, academic faculty positions are no longer the guaranteed career path for young scientists. In reality, less than 8% of students entering into a Ph.D. program in Biology will obtain a faculty position in academia (ASCB). In order to fill the need for additional training required for future success in alternative science career paths, current Boston area PDAs have been working on bringing Career Development workshops to their individual institutes.
This career workshop is geared toward postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. Throughout the two-day workshop, fellows and students will have the opportunity to attend a series of events focusing on career development in non-academic paths (please see attached agenda for details).
The specific aims of the workshop are as follows:
- Provide key tools required for successful career development
- Teach different career paths in non-academic positions
- Improve leadership and management skills
- Provide successful networking techniques and host a multi-PDA networking event with area organizations, and industry representatives
