“NOT Networking 101: Building Relationships for Success,” June 22

The NextGen Association of Postdocs and Grad Students, in collaboration with the Office of Academic Affairs, would like to invite you to a special seminar, “NOT Networking 101: Building Relationships for Success,” presented by Joanne Kamens, PhD, Executive Director, AddGene, on June 22, 2015, 3:00-4:30 p.m. in the Yellowstone Room. An interactive networking reception will follow the seminar.

Networking has gotten a really bad name these days. I take your card, you take my card and then we don’t call each other. This workshop is designed to reintroduce you to how strong professional relationships can be necessary for most people to succeed in their careers. It will provide practical tools for meeting people and for nurturing new and established connections.

This event is open to all members of the Broad community and is part of an ongoing series of career and professional development seminars and workshops. Contact Angela Florentino if you have any questions.

We have two invited guests who will be describing current visualization projects and challenges in genomic and socioeconomic data:

Ilya Shlyakhter (Sabeti Lab)
Brian James (Fathom Information Design)

All members of the Broad community are invited! Refreshments will be served.

MassBioSciences Career Development Workshop, April 28-29

FormHeader

The NextGen Association, in collaboration with postdoc associations from Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard School of Public Health, Tufts University, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, is pleased to announce the 2015 MassBioSciences Career Development Workshop, April 28-29, at the Broad Institute.

Our workshop is being organized to bring area scientists together for a two-day training event where they will learn about alternative career paths, transferable skills, leadership and management styles, and networking techniques.

In the world of today’s research, academic faculty positions are no longer the guaranteed career path for young scientists. In reality, less than 8% of students entering into a Ph.D. program in Biology will obtain a faculty position in academia (ASCB). In order to fill the need for additional training required for future success in alternative science career paths, current Boston area PDAs have been working on bringing Career Development workshops to their individual institutes.

This career workshop is geared toward postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. Throughout the two-day workshop, fellows and students will have the opportunity to attend a series of events focusing on career development in non-academic paths (please see attached agenda for details).

The specific aims of the workshop are as follows:

  • Provide key tools required for successful career development
  • Teach different career paths in non-academic positions
  • Improve leadership and management skills
  • Provide successful networking techniques and host a multi-PDA networking event with area organizations, and industry representatives

Space is limited. If you are interested in attending one or both days, please apply:broad.io/biosciencesworkshop. The deadline for registration is March 20th and final participants will be selected at random.

For more information please visit biocareerworkshop.com or join the event groups on Facebook and LinkedIn.
